found: Tooley's dict. of mapmakers, rev. ed., 2001(Farmer, John, 1795-1859, surveyor and teacher from Saratoga County, New York. After compiling a map of Michigan for Orange Risdon in 1824 he established his own map making company in Detroit in 1825. He sold the copyright in his maps to J.H. Colton in 1835, but returned to copper engraving and map publishing in 1844. In the ensuing years he built up a successful map engraving and publishing company, which on his death was continued by his widow and three children)
